A gypsum access panel is a removable or openable panel installed in a drywall wall, gypsum board ceiling or suspended ceiling. It provides convenient access to concealed electrical wiring, plumbing pipes, HVAC equipment, valves and other building services without damaging the surrounding wall or ceiling.
In this guide, we explain what a gypsum access panel is, how it works, where it is used and how to install one correctly.

A gypsum access panel is an inspection opening designed for gypsum-based wall and ceiling systems. It normally includes a frame and a door or removable panel. The panel can be opened when maintenance is required and closed afterward to maintain a clean interior appearance.
Many models use an aluminum frame with a gypsum board infill panel. This construction allows the access panel to coordinate with drywall, plasterboard and gypsum ceiling surfaces. Depending on the design, the panel may use concealed hinges, removable hardware, touch latches, spring latches or other opening mechanisms.
For project applications, the correct access panel should be selected according to the opening size, wall or ceiling structure, required access frequency, panel thickness and finishing method.
The frame is installed into a prepared opening in the wall or ceiling. The frame provides the edge of the opening and supports the access door. The door can then be opened or removed to reach the concealed services behind the surface.
Some access panels have a visible frame. Other models are designed for a more concealed or flush appearance and can be finished with joint compound and paint. The installation method depends on the product structure and the surrounding drywall system.
This type uses an aluminum alloy frame with a gypsum board infill panel. It is commonly used in drywall walls and gypsum ceilings where a lightweight and clean-looking access solution is required.
A hinged access panel remains connected to the frame when opened. It is suitable for locations that require frequent inspection or maintenance.
A removable panel can be lifted off or detached from the frame. It is useful where a larger clear opening is needed or where the panel must be completely removed during maintenance.
A flush access panel is designed to reduce the visible difference between the panel and the surrounding wall or ceiling. Depending on the model, the frame may be finished with joint compound, tape and paint.
Ceiling access panels are often used for HVAC equipment, electrical components, valves and ceiling services. Wall access panels are commonly used for plumbing connections, electrical boxes and service cavities.
Gypsum access panels are used wherever concealed building services require future inspection or maintenance access.
Installing an access panel during the construction stage can reduce the need to cut open a finished wall or ceiling later.
The following method provides general guidance for a standard drywall or gypsum board installation. Always check the product drawing and installation requirements before fixing the panel.

Choose a location that provides practical access to the concealed equipment. Check the position of pipes, cables, ducts and structural framing before cutting the wall or ceiling.
For a ceiling installation, make sure the area can support the frame and that the opened panel will not interfere with lighting, air diffusers or other ceiling components.
Measure the required access opening and mark the position carefully. Use the manufacturer’s recommended opening size instead of relying only on the nominal external size of the panel.
Keep the marked lines square. An uneven opening can make it difficult to align the frame and may create an inconsistent gap around the door.
Cut the gypsum board along the marked lines using a drywall saw, utility knife or suitable cutting tool. Work carefully to avoid damaging concealed services and surrounding boards.
For larger access panels, additional framing or support may be required around the opening. The required support depends on the panel dimensions and the construction of the wall or ceiling.
Place the aluminum frame into the opening and check that it is level, square and correctly aligned with the surrounding surface.
Make sure the door can open, close or be removed before completing the fixing work.
Fix the frame to the surrounding gypsum board, metal framing or supporting structure using the recommended screws or fasteners. Follow the fixing locations and spacing specified for the selected model.
Do not rely on adhesive alone unless the product installation instructions specifically allow adhesive mounting.
Install the door leaf, hinges, latches or removable fittings according to the product design. Check that the opening mechanism works smoothly and that the door is properly supported when opened.
If the model includes a safety cable or retaining device, install it before the access panel is put into service.
For a concealed or flush installation, apply joint tape and joint compound around the finishing edge according to the frame design. Allow the compound to dry, sand the surface and apply the selected paint or finish.
For a visible-frame access panel, complete the surrounding wall or ceiling finish without blocking the door, hinges or latch.
Open and close the panel several times after installation. Check the alignment, gap, latch operation and stability of the frame. Make sure the panel can be opened later without damaging the finished wall or ceiling.
Common access panel sizes include 200x200mm, 300x300mm, 400x400mm, 500x500mm, 600x600mm and 600x1200mm. The available size range depends on the supplier, frame construction and intended installation location.
For project orders, provide the required width, height, wall or ceiling application, panel thickness and quantity so the suitable configuration can be confirmed.
A gypsum access panel is used to reach concealed electrical, plumbing, HVAC and other building services for inspection, repair and maintenance.
Yes. Gypsum access panels can be installed in suitable gypsum board ceilings and suspended ceiling areas. The frame and opening method should be selected according to the ceiling structure and panel size.
Yes. It can be installed in compatible drywall, plasterboard and gypsum board wall systems. The wall framing and opening size should be checked before installation.
Not every gypsum access panel is fire-rated. Fire resistance must be confirmed from the product specification and test documentation for the specific model.
Many gypsum-faced access panels can be finished or painted to coordinate with the surrounding wall or ceiling. The correct finishing method depends on the panel surface and frame design.
Custom sizes and configurations may be available for project orders. Please provide the required dimensions, application and quantity for confirmation.
A gypsum access panel provides a practical way to maintain concealed services without repeatedly damaging finished walls or ceilings. By selecting the correct size, preparing a square opening, securing the frame properly and completing the surrounding finish carefully, contractors can create a useful and visually consistent maintenance access point.
